Pharmacy goes digital: new guidelines, events and more
April 2018

Welcome to the April edition of #Share.

We know that our readers are passionate about how digital health technologies can improve the lives of Australians, patients and carers alike. So if you haven’t already sent us your contribution to the upcoming
Framework for Action – guiding the implementation of Australia’s National Digital Health Strategy – we encourage you to do so soon.

The pharmacy sector is
going digital and rapidly embracing My Health Record. This month we learn about new guidelines for meaningful clinical use from the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, the personal reflections of pharmacist Chris Braithwaite, and TerryWhite Chemmart's My Health Record masterclass, which was launched by the Minister for Health Greg Hunt MP.

Achieving full interoperability in digital health systems across Australia is a massive undertaking, with many component parts. One of the key components is the Australian Medicines Terminology (AMT), which enables the safe and accurate transfer of medicines information between systems. The AMT has been updated monthly since 2009 and
recently reached its 100th release – a milestone worth celebrating.

Last, but by no means least, the federal government’s significant new
investment in the Digital Health Cooperative Research Centre is expected to have positive long-term impacts on many, if not all, sectors of Australian health and care delivery. This investment is forecast to create over 1,000 jobs, support improved services and health outcomes for Australian consumers and clinicians, and return many times the original expenditure.
